Teacher Education
HMIE Inspectors offer ongoing professional advice to Scottish Ministers and the Scottish Government on matters relating to the full continuum of teacher education, including the early phase (initial teacher education and probation), CPD and leadership.
Working in partnership with colleagues across Education Scotland and all of our stakeholder groups, HM Inspectors are supporting the implementation of Teaching Scotland's Future. The report, published in January 2011, sets out 50 recommendations for improving teacher education. You can access the report and the Government responses from:

HM Inspectors have no current role in carrying out a planned cycle of institutional inspections or reviews of providers of initial teacher education but, generally at the request of Scottish Ministers, they carry out reviews and publish reports on aspects of teacher education. We provide a wide range of ongoing support and challenge to universities which provide initial teacher education. This includes regular quality improvement visits and working with university staff to provide presentations and workshops. Recent reports and submissions that HM Inspectors have published on teacher education include:
Review of Teacher Employment in Scotland - HMIE submission of Evidence (26/05/2011)
Review of Teacher Education in Scotland - HMIE Analysis (17/01/2011)
