Teacher Education
HMIE offers ongoing professional advice to Scottish Ministers and Scottish Executive divisions on matters relating to both initial teacher education (ITE) and continuing professional development (CPD) for teachers in post.
HMIE has no current role in carrying out a planned cycle of institutional inspections or reviews of ITE but, generally at the request of Scottish Ministers, it carries out reviews and publishes reports on aspects of teacher education.
Reports include the following.
Preparing to Teach Literacy (2002) This was a report on how well student teachers were prepared to teach literacy to pupils aged 5-14.
ICT: Into the Classroom of Tomorrow (2002) A report on quality assurance of the training provision for Scottish school teachers and librarians within the New Opportunities Fund (NOF) ICT training initiative.
Evolution or Revolution? HMIE Scoping review of Initial Teacher Education (2003) This report was acknowledged as the starting point for the Second Stage Review of Initial Teacher Education.
Student Teacher Placements within Initial Teacher Education (2005)
Progress with Student Teacher Placements (2006)
Mentoring in Teacher Education (2008)
A current aspect review is focusing on preparation within teacher education to deliver Curriculum for Excellence. An
interim report is scheduled for mid 2009 and a final report for 2010.
