HM Inspectors of Schools Follow-up to the Inspection of Our Lady’s RC Primary School Dundee City Council

Main points for action

1. Gaps in resources should be made good, and additional partitions should be provided for classrooms.

The school and the education authority had effectively addressed this recommendation.

The school had carried out a full review of resources and had taken decisive action to improve provision. Effective measures had been taken to reduce the noise across the open-plan classrooms. There was now a purposeful working atmosphere in the school.

2. In partnership with the School Board and parents, the school should review and improve homework policy and the handbook of information for parents.

The school had effectively addressed most aspects of this recommendation.

The school had carried out a survey of parents, staff and pupils to inform the development of a new homework policy. A more consistent approach to setting and monitoring homework was now in place across the school. The school should outline its approach to homework in the handbook for parents.

3. To improve attainment, the school should complete the implementation of a teaching programme in mathematics in line with national guidelines, as identified in its development plan.

The school and the education authority had made very good progress towards addressing this recommendation.

A new mathematics programme in line with national guidelines was now in place. It was based on clear advice which teachers used to plan and assess pupils’ work. In particular, more emphasis was being given to the teaching of mental calculation.
