Main Points for Action

1. The education authority should work with the school to find ways of reducing noise levels in open-plan areas.

The school had met this recommendation.

Following full consultation with staff and pupils, the headteacher had introduced several ways of minimising noise in open-plan areas. Staff co-operated very well on planning and working arrangements to ensure effective learning and teaching. They made efficient use of enclosed areas for some activities. The introduction of team teaching approaches in P6 and P7 had been particularly successful. Staff were implementing very well organised procedures to control the movement of pupils within the school.

2. In personal, social and health education, the school should:

- build on current strengths in developing a more integrated and coherent programme from P1 to P7; and

- continue to develop its approaches to assessing, recording and reporting on pupils’ progress and achievement.

The school had met this recommendation.

A school working party had reviewed and updated the programme for personal, social and health education, in consultation with all staff. All aspects of the revised programme were well integrated and provided very good continuity and progression in pupils’ learning from P1 to P7. The programme was firmly based on national advice and was well supported by an extensive range of resources. It made very good use of input from external agencies.
