In environmental studies overall attainment in coursework was good. Across the school pupils were developing good skills in collecting, recording and evaluating from different sources of evidence. Features of attainment included the following.

In
science
pupils in the middle stages had a good understanding of the main structures and functions of the human body. Those in the early stages were able to carry out basic experiments in friction.

Pupils at the upper stages were developing a very good understanding of the nature of
historical
evidence through their study of Victorian times in their local area. They also were knowledgeable about recent events such as the setting up of the Scottish Parliament, and were able to discuss how it might affect their lives.

At all stages pupils were developing good skills in
geography
. Most were able to use atlases with confidence, and discuss different aspects of the physical environment.
·
In
technology
pupils at the early stages understood how materials responded to different weather conditions.
·
In
health education
almost all pupils had a good understanding of the need for healthy eating and safe living.
· Pupils skills in information technology were beginning to develop well at all stages. The majority of pupils at the upper
stages were able to send e-mail and to access the Internet.
Parents views
Almost all parents who responded to the questionnaire were very pleased with the provision made for their children. They all felt that their children enjoyed being in school and found the work stimulating. Almost all believed that their children were encouraged to work to the best of their ability.
Ethos
The ethos of the school was very positive. The atmosphere was welcoming and friendly, and pupils were proud of belonging to the school. Caring and committed teachers made good use of praise, and encouraged the efforts of their pupils. In all classes relationships between teachers and pupils were very good. Pupils were well behaved, good-natured and quick to help one another. The school promoted positive behaviour through an awards system. Pupils at the middle and upper stages were given good opportunities to be responsible for a variety of helpful tasks. Attendance was above the national average.
School and community
Parents held the school in high regard, and relationships with the wider community were very good. Features of these links included:
